Default TR230 or X1 in an Auto..?

I've tried searching, but to no avail. I am really interested in getting a cam sometime in the very near future. I want to make about as much power as possible for now through stock heads. Current mods are:

3400 Stall
LT's
Lid
TB

When I do the cam, I am going to do a LS6 intake, and get LS1 Edit. Are either the TR230, or the X1 really to big to have in a daily driven auto? If you have either of these in your A4, what are your dyno #'s or track times? I do plan to do heads later. I know bigger isn't always better, but if neither of these cams, what would you guys suggest?

I spray very occasionally, but not enough to warrant a nitrous cam. I would rather have NA power all the time, than a little more power with the N2o..

Anyone..?

Can I spin my stock bottom-end to 6700 day in and day on my daily driven 75,000 mile motor?

I would say that those wouldn't be a good choice. A friend has a 230 cam (not sure on specific details) in his auto and is have a little bit of problems with it dieing and other minor probs. Also, running with 3.23s with a cam that big is going to be real tuff. My friend is running 4.10s. I think he was making around 390 rwhp when his car was a manual. He hasn't dynoed with the new tranny.

Hope this helps a little.

hey ack!

i have a 230/230 and these cams you are describing would idle a BIT better than mine with the smaller exhaust duration, but IMHO unless you are ready to have a car that surges even a little bit (not cool with an auto) and some trouble here and there (and that is a best case scenerio) i would not chose it. i def would not do it with a daily driver.

nearly all these big cams are for 6 speed guys and those cars are a totally different story. and to get peak performance, if you chose these bigger cams you will spin your motor to 6800 easily.

talk to both MTI or TR and get their scoop. see if they can program it.

me personally, i would keep it at a 114, but i am a bit on the conservative side. i like my car running! there are guys out there that run 111-112 lsa cams but they have to admit there is some issues. the extra cam really isnt worth the 5-7 RWHP gain. esp on stock heads. i say 224

I don't mind some lope... I just don't want this thing to be a terd until I get heads.

Anyone know whats up with Raughammer's (sp?) site? I can't get to it anymore to see the cam discussions...

I`ve got the X1 cam and love it with A4. Jayson at MTI has tuned her really well. The surge your talking about isn`t bad. I don`t spin my motor over 6500rpm. Jayson at MTI can help you with everything. They are great people. They put my whole set-up together! Sweet, check my Sig!

with a 3400 stall and 3.23 gears, I would recommend a C1 cam. I believe a big cam will serve you no benefit when it wants to spin up to 6500+ and your gears and stall want to keep you around 6000-6200 tops.

I'm getting ready to move up to a TR230 cam, but I'm also adding 4.30 gears and I already have a 4400 stall.

later,
Steve

I'd say call MTI and LG Motorsports (about the G5 and G5X1) and talk to them. Loco off our local board has the G5 in his A4 and has nothing but good things to say about it. That car pulls like a beast too.

Good info here. Im basically in the same boat, going to be picking a cam here in the next month or so if all goes well.

LT's
TCI 3500
2.73's
NX 125 shot
ported TB

I will do some TEA heads at a later date so I would like to make 375-385 on a cam and 415ish on heads.

Ive been readin reply's on the G5 from LG and seems awesome. I think that is what im going to get.

I plan on doing head later within the year. So I dont mind suffering a little on the power for now, to see it really jump when I get heads. I'm still undecided. I need to make a decision soon. I hope to order a cam within a month or so...

I went a little nutty.
I had a custom comp cam ground for myself. The lift is in the low 570 range (don't have exact numbers here) and it is a 230/226 with a 111LSA on an A4. Getting dyno tuning and going to have them tune it for a pretty hard lope (adjusting the idle)
Why not have a little fun!
I have a ST3500 but am upgrading to a TP4400 and 3.73s in the summer.
Dropping the car off tommorrow. WOOHOO!!!
With my headers open it should idle CRAZY! I'll get clips up ASAP.
Good luck!
Nick

PS - Make sure that the PV clearance is good when you go very big.

I have read a few more things saying that the TR230 will show some great numbers on stock heads. I guess I could always just set the limiter, and shift points at a reasonable are for now if I got the TR230. Then later after a bottom build up, spin it faster? I am going to call MTI & TR sometime soon. But then again, shifting before it made peak power would almost be like a waste anyway...

Joe I have the G5 and I really like it. I ran a 11.7 @ 114 with a slipping tranny and shifting at 6400. I'll give ya a ride whenever your in Tulsa.

Loco, that would be about perfect for me. Do you still have stock heads? Are you running a converer or not? What other various things have you done? Any dyno numbers? Sorry for so many questions, I just don't want to make a decision that I will regret...

Loco is running stock heads with 918's and has a Yank 4400. His car has better times in it than he's gotten... it pulls rediculously well on the highway. Walked away from Tyler and me.
